HOW TO HANDLE THE STRESS OF MOVING
As an expert in Stress Management Dr. Robert Pike from Pike Chiropractic Healing Center in Keswick shares with us some tips to improve our moving experience by reducing the amount of stress we feel. Wayne Winch and his team with comments by Dr. Bob Pike collaborate in this blog to elevate your moving experience to the next level!
Moving is a very stressful life event. Recent studies show it can be as stressful as divorce and dealing with the death of a loved one. These are a few reasons why we feel stress when moving:1. Loss of Security: Moving disrupts your normal routine and generates feelings of uncertainty and insecurity. When we make a move we are giving up known levels of security and trading them for the unknown. A very common type of tension is FEAR of the unknown! We can defeat it by embracing it as a new friend.
2. Packing: As we pack up our years of accumulated belongings, we are forcing ourselves to review our lives. We may find old photographs, mementos, letters or clothing that remind us of years gone by that can trigger both positive and negative responses. Another emotional barrier that can be reframed as a kind of graduation ceremony. An initiation into your next chapter of life!
3. Loss of Support: Old communities provide stability and support. We know the schedule of local amenities and the location of places that are routine within our lives. We have developed relationships with neighbours and teachers. We have made friends.
This very strong foundation will actually provide you with the launching pad needed to successfully take off and navigate through the challenges in your move!
Moving is stressful, but it does help to become aware of the internal sources of your stress. Knowing the sources can help us find solutions to overcome the stress of moving as quickly as possible.
Tips to make your move less stressful with Dr. Pike’s perspective added!
1. Be prepared - Advance planning and organization will make your move go smoother. Make sure you have all your closing day paperwork with you in a file. Put aside a little money for forgotten little extras like bubble wrap and coffee for helpers. Acknowledge yourself for summoning the stamina and initiative to make the decision to deliberatly change your life. Recognize your self for being totally responsible to your ideal life vision! The biggest stress of life is our failure to consistently recognize our own value and uniqueness!
2. Don't forget to eat - Health and Nutrition plays a very big role in our ability to cope with stress. Know local dining options, you are not going to want to cook for your family on moving day, treat yourself to a meal out, or order a meal in, but do not forget to eat! What a great idea! My suggestion would be to do this on a regular basis to bond with each other and the new neighbourhood too! Family time is always a healthy choice!
3. Find care for Kids - Enlist in the help of family to watch children while you are sorting and moving boxes initially. Children should not be removed from the process of moving entirely, but perhaps a visit with Grandma during your initial loading can help keep you focused on the task at hand. Brilliant strategy!
4. Relax - Your mindset can really play havoc on your emotions on moving day and if you can't view the move as a positive experience you will have trouble shaking the tension that can build up. Seeing your move as positive evidence of your commitment to manifest your best life experience will empower you with inspiration for your personal journey...I very healthy state!
